I cannot think of a better or more fun way to learn the art of bonsai than to attend our BYOT (bring your own tree) Workshops. They are my favorite. You never know who is going to show up and what kind of tree they will bring.
Could be someone who has never had a bonsai to someone that has been doing bonsai for many years. We all get to learn from each other. You can only learn so much from YouTube and books. There is no substitute for being around people with the same desire to learn and have fun doing it. You can’t laugh and joke around with a book. You can’t build a friendship and develop that camaraderie with YouTube.
This is not your usual 2–3-hour BYOT. We try to get everyone involved with what is going on. If we are doing the initial styling of a tree, we will have a discussion to get others’ opinions. Sometimes even a pot choice and tree placement in that pot can lead to some good discussions.
I may take someone’s tree and do a demo with it so everyone can see and get involved. This is how we all learn by exchanging ideas and experiences, opening our mind up to new ideas. We are only limited by our imagination. That is the creative side. Then all you need to do is properly learn the techniques to achieve what you want and the horticulture capabilities of the tree.
In these workshops we cover everything from the initial styling to detailed refinement, root pruning and potting, grafting and air layering, pruning for taper and direction. Everything and in every way bonsai.
I’ve had beginners come up with a few good ideas that us more seasoned artists didn’t see, you just never know. Bonsai is an art form open to many interpretations.
So, you can come and spend just a couple of hours if all you want is some styling ideas or help potting or wiring a tree, we have people that can help you with that. Or spend the day and soak in all that we are doing. We have some delicious pizza delivered for lunch so why not just make a day of it? This is an open workshop which means you do not have to pre-register, come and go as you please.
The cost is only $35.00 for the workshop including soil and wire, within reason.
Pre-bonsai trees and all supplies are available.
Observers are welcome at no charge, come spend the day or just a few hours.
Everyone can come anytime between the hours of 9:00am-3:00pm.
