Broadleaf Course - Fall Weekday 2024

In this year-long course, we will study each aspect of broadleaf bonsai from growing to styling. Students will pot, clean, taper, trim, pluck, wire, and style to learn how to correctly maintain broadleaf bonsai. We’re very lucky to live in an area of Florida where temperate and subtropical trees can thrive. This course will examine non-evergreen deciduous trees, like maple and cypress, evergreen broadleaf trees, such as boxwoods and ilex, subtropical/tropical varieties, like serissa and jasmine, as well as many others. Students will run a gamut of broadleaf trees to better comprehend seasonal differences and timetables for work. In addition to wiring, clip-n-grow will be heavily utilized to create and advance material. The information covered throughout applies to a wide variety of trees suitable for any enthusiast. Students are not required to supply their own material; this will be supplied by the nursery to ensure students can work within their abilities and time frame. Trees provided will be in all stages of development; young and old, large, and small. Broadleaf experience is not required and all experience levels are welcome as this course is comprehensive and beneficial to anyone. Dates for this course are based on each stage of a broadleaf’s development in relation to bonsai and will be communicated in advance.
